Domain Hosting: Pipex to Acquire Host Europe for £32M
April 2, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The board of Host Europe (hosteurope.com) has recommended that the pan-European Web hosting provider accept an acquisition offer by London-based Web hosting and Internet communications provider Pipex Communications (pipexcommunications.net). The offer is for approximately £31.18 million in cash. Pipex said it expects the acquisition to give it "additional focus" on the hosting and managed services market, bringing its current service offerings more balance. The company also anticipates that integrating Host Europe's Web hosting operations will help it achieve additional cost savings.

Domain Hosting: C I Host Replaces BlackIce Firewall
April 2, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider C I Host (cihost.com) said on Thursday that it is replacing its security solution provider Atlanta-based Internet Security Systems (ISS.net), developer of the BlackIce Defender firewall (blackice.iss.net). C I Host said it is replacing BlackIce with 3Com's firewall server PCI cards for all its servers. The 3Com cards combine firewall hardware and management software, a configuration that C I Host says provides critical advantage over software-only products. The deployment is "in the tens of thousands of dollars," said Christopher Faulkner, the company's CEO.

Domain Hosting: ICANN Reports on Whois Innaccuracies
The Whois database has been plagued over the years with inaccuracies, many of them perpetrated by organizations running illegal or quasi-legal operations, which often provide innaccurate contact information in order to avoid detection. There is currently no system in place to verify the accuracy of Whois information. As a result, ICANN instituted the WHOIS Data Problem Report System (WDPRS) in September 2002 to let individual users report incorrect domain registration information. The annual report was released earlier this week and found that 54 percent of the complaints dealt with missing or phony email addresses, while 49 percent dealt with bogus phone numbers.

Domain Hosting: The Web Host Industry Week in Review
Liam Eagle, theWHIR.com April 2, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The most notable trend in the Web hosting industry news this week was a resurgence in the recently quiet area of acquisitions, including one particularly high-profile deal in the Friday sale of Host Europe. Along with the acquisitions, however, were several new and noteworthy developments in such ongoing issues as the recent impact of virus threats and the SCO Group's intellectual property claims.
